Enrico Besta

Enrico Besta (born June 29, 1874 in Tresivio ; † July 12, 1952 in Milan ) was an Italian legal and economic historian . His focus was on the legal history between late antiquity and modern times, the medieval history of Sardinia, the state organization and funding of the Republic of Venice . But he also repeatedly wrote studies on individual sources and regional history.

Besta studied legal history at the University of Padua . In 1898 he was appointed professor at the University of Sassari . In 1904 he moved to the University of Palermo , in 1909 he followed a call to the University of Pisa and in 1924 to the University of Milan .

His two-volume overview La Sardegna medievale was published in 1908/09, and in 1930 Fonti del diritto italiano dalla caduta dell'impero romano sino ai tempi nostri . Even before the turn of the century, he and Giovanni Monticolo began to publish the capitularies of the Venetian guilds (arti). In the field of the Venetian history of law and state organs he published an important work on the Senate. A work on Venetian criminal law was written by 1899. By 1912, a further basic work was his volume on the three-volume history of the Venetian state finances under the title Bilanci generali della Repubblica di Venezia .

In 1938 he edited sources on Italian legal history, followed by a presentation on ancient legal history in 1946. In his last years he dealt with the history of the area around Chiavenna and the Valtellina .

In 1952, Besta became consigliere of the Centro Italiano di Studi sull'Alto Medioevo in Spoleto, founded by Giuseppe Ermini . He was a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei since 1928 and became a socio nazionale in 1946.
