Enrique Fierro (born July 26, 1941 or July 26, 1942 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † May 21, 2016 in Austin , Texas ) was a Uruguayan writer and literary critic .

After studying literature at the Instituto de Profesores Artigas (IPA), which was successfully completed in 1967, further studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) followed from 1974 to 1975 . He taught literary theory at the Instituto de Profesores Artigas , 1974 at the University of Rostock , from 1974 to 1985 at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga (UCUDAL), at the UNAM, the Universidad de Guerrero and from 1974 to 1984 from the Mexican Universidad Anáhuac . During the military dictatorship that ruled between 1973 and 1984, he went into exile in Mexico, but returned to his native city at the end of this phase of Uruguay's history. There he took over the position of director of the Uruguayan national library in 1985, which he held until 1989. He then moved to Austin (Texas) in the USA as part of a teaching position for contemporary Hispanic American literature at the University of Texas . Fierro was also a literary critic for Marcha and the Mexican newspaper El Día and was a member of the editorial board (Consejo de Redacción) of the magazine Vuelta in Mexico.

Fierro published numerous books. In addition to translations by well-known writers such as William Shakespeare , Paul Éluard , Ezra Pound and Jean Genet, his works include a large number of other works.
