Enrique Larreta , actually Enrique Rodríguez Larreta Maza (born March 4, 1875 in Buenos Aires , † July 6, 1961 ibid) was an Argentine diplomat and writer.

Life

Larreta came from a bourgeois family in Uruguay : his parents were Carlos Rodríguez Larreta († 1915) and Adela Augustina Maza Oribe († 1899). He completed his school days with the help of private tutors, then he studied law at the university in his hometown and graduated successfully in 1897.

Subsequently, Larreta began teaching medieval history at the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires . On November 15, 1900, he married Josefina Anacleta Anchorena and had five children with her: Enrique (* 1902), Josefina (* 1905), Agustín (* 1909), Fernando (* 1911) and Mercedes. Larreta was connected to a very influential family through his marriage.

When Roque Sáenz Peña became president of Argentina in 1910, he sent Larreta to France as a diplomat. In 1915 Larreta settled in Ávila for a year , where he a. a. Miguel de Unamuno met. In 1919 he returned to Buenos Aires and devoted himself to writing for the rest of his life. For several years Larreta also lived in Seville , where he a. a. helped shape the Exposición Iberoamericana de Sevilla in 1929 .

Enrique Larreta died on July 6, 1961 in Buenos Aires at the age of 86 and was buried in La Recoleta Cemetery . His house in Belgrano , which the architect Ernesto Bunge (1839–1913) designed in 1886, including a large park, was converted in 1962 into the Museo de Arte Español Enrique Larreta .

Honors

The cities of Alcalá de Henares , Ávila, Madrid and Segovia named streets in his honor.

reception

Larreta's work spans an arc from Vanguardia to Modernismo . He has written novels, plays and several volumes of poetry; his most famous work is the novel "La gloria de Don Ramiro". The fact that Larreta also collected art during his life can be seen in his house or the current museum.
