Enrique Metinides

Jaralambos Enrique Metinides Tsironides (born February 12, 1934 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican photographer , known for his often shocking pictures of life in Mexico City.

Life

Enrique Metinides comes from a family of Greek immigrants.

At the age of 12 he published his first picture of a corpse, which earned him the nickname "El Niño" ("the boy"). A year later he worked as an unpaid intern for the crime reporter of La Prensa and thus began a career as a photographer. From 1949 to 1979 he shot pictures of crimes, murders, plane crashes and other catastrophes for the Nota Rosa ("Bloody News") of the Mexican tabloids.

His stark portrayal of the harsh reality of big city life is often compared to the work of the American Weegee .

Metinides' work has been exhibited in numerous galleries, including La Casa de América, Madrid ; Central de Arte Guadalajara , Mexico ; The Photographers Gallery, London , and the Anton Kern Gallery, New York .

He lives and works in Mexico City.
