Enrique Simonet (born February 2, 1866 in Valencia , † April 20, 1927 in Madrid ) was a Spanish painter .

Life

Beginnings

Enrique Simonet was born in Valencia on February 2, 1866. After studying painting at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia , he continued his training in the studio of the painter Bernardo Ferrándiz in Málaga and joined the local group of artists, the Escuela malagueña de pintura .

In 1887 Simonet went to Rome , where he painted the picture of the Beheading of St. Paul , which is now in the Cathedral of Malaga . He traveled all over Italy, visited Paris several times and made a trip across the Mediterranean in 1890 . In 1890 he completed his most famous work, the anatomy of the heart , also called the autopsy , in Rome .

He traveled to the Holy Land , where he gained impressions for his work Flevit super illam , for which he received numerous awards, such as the first prize at the International Exhibition in Madrid in 1892, in Chicago in 1893, in Barcelona in 1896 and in Paris in 1900.

Between 1893 and 1894 he traveled to Morocco as a correspondent for the magazine La Ilustración Española y Americana . In 1901 he received the chair for studies of the forms of nature and art at the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi in Barcelona.

Last years

In 1911 he became a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Since he also devoted himself to landscape painting, between 1921 and 1922 he was director of the residence for landscape painters in the former monastery of El Paular at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama. He also held a chair at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Printing Technology in Madrid.

Einrique Simonet died on April 20, 1927 in Madrid.
