Enriqueta Basilio became the first woman to light the Olympic flame in 1968.

Norma Enriqueta Basilio Sotelo (born July 15, 1948 in Mexicali - † October 26, 2019 ) was a Mexican athlete . She lit at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City , the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony. She was the first woman in Olympic history to receive this honor.

At the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in 1967 , Eriqueta Basilio reached seventh place over the 80 meter hurdles .

She started in three competitions at her home games . In the hurdles sprint, she finished sixth in her preliminary run with 11.2 seconds and thus missed the qualification for the next round. Over the 400 meters she was eliminated in the first lap with 55.47 seconds, which was enough for fifth place in her run. Together with Alma Rosa Martínez , Mercedes Román and Esperanza Girón , she competed as a 100-meter relay . With 47.09 s they took seventh place in their preliminary run.

After her sporting career, Enriqueta Basilio became involved in politics and took over political positions for the Partido Revolucionario Institucional . In the run-up to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , she carried the Olympic flame during the torch relay.
