The duck swamp in the Harz Mountains is an abandoned reservoir near Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the Goslar district in Lower Saxony . It is one of the Upper Harz ponds that were created for Montanz purposes .

The storage pond is located in the Upper Harz in the Harz Nature Park , and is located about a kilometer southeast of the district Clausthal on the main road 242 at the water trail to Huttaler Widerwaage . A few meters east of the duck swamp is the source of the Innerste , the Innerstesprung, which was dammed for the first time at this point; the pond forms the first of a total of seven barrages of the innermost.

The duck swamp, formerly also known as Neuer Benedicter-Teich and Rathsteich , was created after 1600 by the Clausthal miners in the northeast of Buntenbock and initially served to supply water to the Benedicte ore mine, a little further north near the western bank of the Upper Pfauenteich. Later the pond was no longer needed to supply the mine with water and was taken over by the council of the mining town of Clausthal; As a starting point for a wooden pipeline, it supplied public wells and important houses in Clausthal with drinking water.

The alternative name "Benedicter Teich", which is rarely used today, was borne by the duck swamp because of its close proximity to the Neue Benedicte pit , which was operated a few hundred meters northwest of the duck swamp until around the middle of the 19th century.

The duck marsh as part of the Upper Harz Ponds is a passive part of the cultural monument Upper Harz Water shelf and belongs to since 2010 UNESCO World Heritage ' Upper Harz Water Management ".
