Epiphyllum cartagense is a species of plant in the genus Epiphyllum from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Epiphyllum cartagense grows with upright, arched or drooping shoots . The thornless main shoots are triangular or round at the base. They grow up to 2 meters long and often have numerous aerial roots . In its upper part, the side shoots appear, which branch off almost at right angles and are arranged in three rows. The upper 2 to 7 centimeters wide section of the side shoots is flattened, lobed, and toothed. The areoles do not have thorns .

The tubular, funnel-shaped flowers usually appear on the flattened parts of the side shoots. They are 15 to 18 inches long. Its very slender flower tube is almost straight on its upright shoots. It is strongly curved on hanging shoots. The outer bracts are yellow, the inner ones white. The stamens are in a single circle. The ellipsoidal, red, slightly fragrant fruits are 7 to 8 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Epiphyllum cartagense is common in Costa Rica in the provinces of Cartago , Guanacaste and San José . The first description as Phyllocactus cartagensis was published in 1902 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in the genus Epiphyllum in 1913 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
