Erchempert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erchempert von Montecassino was a Longobard chronicler of the second half of the 9th century and a monk in Montecassino .

Life and writings

In his Lombard history he only gives scanty information about his life, other sources are not available. On August 23, 881 he was captured by Pandenulf von Capua in the Pilano Castle (near Conca della Campania , Province of Caserta , Campania) and lost all of his property. In Capua he joined the community of Montecassino, which after the destruction of the monastery by the Saracens in 883 emigrated first to Teano and then to Capua .

In Capua, the Historia Langobardorum Beneventi degentium was created , which takes sides for the Benevento rulers with regard to the division of the Benevento ducat against the princes of Capua . Erchempert deals with the history of his people from Duke Arechis to 888/889. It cannot be clarified whether the abrupt end was brought about by his death or for other reasons. His presentation is based initially on Paulus Diaconus and then increasingly on his own memory, but other sources were also available to him, as his report on the Franconian-Lombard Treaty shows. Even if only a single manuscript from around 1300, in Salerno was written, handed his work (Vat. Lat. 5001), it is the Chronicon Salernitanum , by Leo of Ostia in the Chronicle of Monte Cassino and in the Chronicon Vulturnense used been. The text was hardly known outside of southern Italy.

Erchempert is also considered to be the author of a poem in 34 verses, which has come down to us in the same manuscript as the Lombard story. The Martyrologium Erchemperti , a metric calendar in 116 hexameters, has been passed down more often . It is already ascribed to him in the manuscripts.
