Tectonic background

Below Peru, the Nazca Plate dips beneath the great South American continental plate to a depth of 650 kilometers. In the area of the quake it moves about 70 millimeters per year eastwards (relative to the larger plate). While most earthquakes occur in subduction zones in the contact area between the two tectonic plates (interplate earthquake), this quake occurred at a displacement within the descending Nazca plate (intraplate earthquake). The fracture surface had a stretch of 180 km x 50 km, according to estimates by the USGS.

Usually there are hardly any aftershocks with such deep tremors.

The control center COEN the Peruvian Civil Defense Indeci According there were 15 injured in the country, in neighboring Ecuador the Federal Emergency Management Agency were according SNGRD also injured 15 people. The fact that relatively few people were harmed despite the strength of the quake is attributed to the great depth of the focus of the quake and the remote location of the epicenter.
