List of earthquakes of the 21st century
The list of earthquakes of the 21st century is a compilation of all previous relevant earthquakes since 2001 with information on the epicenter , the focus depth , the strength and intensity of earthquakes , plus the number of earthquakes caused by the earthquake itself or its accompanying phenomena such as tsunami , landslide , soil liquefaction u. similar perished and missing persons.
Earthquakes that have at least one of the following characteristics are considered relevant for the list provided here:
- Torque magnitude equal to or greater than 7.0
- Significant damage with an intensity on the Mercalli scale or its modifications of at least VII
- Reporting in mass media on several continents
- other special features

- M W = strength of the earthquake on the moment magnitude scale
- I = Intensity on the Modified Mercalli Scale

A total of more than 21,000 people were killed by earthquakes in 2001, the earthquake with the largest number of victims was the earthquake in Gujarat , the strongest the earthquake off Peru with a magnitude of 8.4.
