The Istanbul earthquake in 2019 was an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 M w in the Sea of ​​Marmara around 40 km southwest of Istanbul on September 26, 2019 at 13:59 local time (10:59 UTC). One person died from a heart attack and 43 others were injured. The earthquake was felt in the provinces of Istanbul , Tekirdağ , Kırklareli , Kocaeli and Sakarya .

The North Anatolian fault zone was created by a leaf displacement on the northern edge of the Anatolian plate on the border with the Eurasian plate . About 1500 km long, the Anatolian Plate runs around 20 km south of Istanbul through the Sea of ​​Marmara.

The last major earthquake in the North Anatolian fault zone occurred a few years earlier on August 17, 1999. The earthquake at Gölcük (7.4 M w ) killed 18,373 people. An earthquake in Düzce (7.2 M w ) followed on November 12, killing 845 people and injuring 4,948.

Three days before the actual main quake, there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 M w on September 23 in the southwest of Istanbul. Two hours before the actual quake, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 M w shook the city of Silivri . The quake finally occurred at 13:59 local time on the western edge of the North Anatolian Fault under the Marmara Sea at a depth of 6.99 km as a leaf displacement. Some sources report a magnitude of 5.7 M w other of 5.8 M L . The epicenter was off the coast of Marmara Ereğlisi and Silivri in the Marmara Sea.

Around 25 minutes after the main quake, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 M w was recorded. More than 300 aftershocks were recorded.

Damage

Schools and hospitals were evacuated after the earthquake. Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya announced that schools would be closed for a day. The Turkish civil protection authority AFAD advised not to enter damaged buildings. In a first statement, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke of eight injured. Later reports said that a total of 43 people were injured primarily from panic and one person with known heart disease died from a heart attack.

More than 473 damaged buildings were reported to AFAD. A minaret of the Hacı Ahmet Tükenmez Mosque in Avcılar collapsed. In Balat , three listed buildings were so badly damaged that they had to be demolished a few hours later by the local government. AFAD reported damage to the Constantinian Wall near the Biruni Üniversitesi , as well as cracks in several buildings and damage to two structures in Sultangazi and Eyüp . A building in Şirinevler had to be evacuated.

The mobile communications of Türk Telekom , Turkcell and Vodafone were briefly disrupted due to the large number of voice calls, but the mobile Internet and the fixed network continued to work. Take-offs and landings at Sabiha Gökçen Airport were temporarily suspended, but were released again after inspection of the runways.
