Atka Iceland is the largest island of the Andreanof Islands , an archipelago in the southwest of the Aleutian Islands . It is located in the Bering Sea , about 80 km east of Adak Island .
The island, which belongs to the US state of Alaska, has a land area of around 1048 km², is 105 km long and between 3 and 32 km wide. In the northeast of Atka is the volcano Mount Korovin (1533 m), the highest point of the island. Historical records show explosive eruptions in 1812 and 1987. The eruptions took place on the Sarichev and Kliuchev volcanic cones. The island of Atka is dominated by a large caldera, which was created 500,000 to 300,000 years ago in a powerful eruption. On the mountain flanks of the Kliuchev and a nearby glaciated valley there are some fumaroles and hot springs.
During the Second World War , the United States Army Air Forces maintained a military airfield here . Today there is a civil airport on the island . The site of a Consolidated B-24 bomber crash was designated a federal memorial in 2008 as part of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument . Only 95 people live on Atka today, mostly in the main town of the same name on the east coast (as of 2000).
