List of grape varieties

Ribolla Gialla is an old autochthonous white wine from Friuli Venezia Giulia and Slovenia , which belongs to the small family of the Ribolla vines. Signs for the cultivation go back to the year 1300, but the Romans are said to have already known them under the name Evola . The variety was very popular and widespread until the 19th century, but the population declined sharply after the phylloxera disaster. It is recommended to grow them in the former Italian provinces of Gorizia , Pordenone and Udine . In the 1990s, the area under vines was 78 hectares .

The variety is grown almost exclusively in the hilly border region between Italy and Slovenia - from Tarcento over the Karst to Istria . It has never spread on the plains because the fertile soil is not suitable for growing the vigorous variety.

There is also a ribolla verde , which is seldom grown due to the poor quality of the wine .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is white-yellowish and hairy with wool. The light green young leaves are slightly hairy and have a slightly bronze tinge.
  • The medium-sized leaves are not curved or three-lobed and slightly curved. The stem bay is open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical to conical grape is shouldered, small to medium-sized and moderately dense. The rounded (sometimes slightly elongated) berries are medium-sized and yellow in color. The aroma of the berry is quite neutral and slightly astringent.

The grape variety ripens around 30 days after the Gutedel and is therefore late-ripening even by northern Italian standards.

Use in wines

The white wine made from the Ribolla grape is generally a light wine with high acidity and floral notes. Many growers in the Friuli Collio, Collio Goriziano and Vipavatal regions ferment the variety with their skins to create a more substantial style. In Friuli, wines from the southern regions have a little more body than wines from the central regions.
