Kanu Island is a small uninhabited island of the Andreanof Islands , which belongs to the Aleutian Islands . The island is about 2.7 km long and 52 m high and lies between Umak Island and Great Sitkin Island .
The original name Unak Island was changed to Canoe in 1936 to make it easier to distinguish between islands with similar names such as Ulak Island or Umak Island . Under its original Aleut name Yunakh Kanu was first recorded in the nautical charts by Mikhail Tebenkow in 1852 .
