Ulak Island ( Aleutian : Yuulax ^ ) is an uninhabited island of the Andreanof Islands , especially the subgroup of the Delarof Islands located in the far west of the Andreanof Islands , and belongs to the Aleutian Islands ( Alaska ). The island is 6 km northwest of Amatignak Island .
Ulak lies in relatively shallow water and the surf is often so heavy that boat traffic to the island is not possible. The climate is typical of the maritime climate in northern latitudes, with cool temperatures, strong winds, lots of fog and rain, and frequent, severe storms. The average daily temperature at sea level is 8.8 ° C in summer and 4.8 ° C as an annual mean. The annual rainfall amounts to 166 cm. Snowfall at sea level rarely exceeds 0.5 m per year. There is no permafrost .
The vegetation is typical of maritime and alpine tundra and consists primarily of grasses , sedge grasses , peat moss , lichens and various herbaceous plants . Trees and bushes are missing. The south side of the island has steep slopes with quite deep soils that are densely overgrown with sea rye. Thousands of seabirds breed here, including petrels , shearwaters , yellow poppies and Aleutian alks . On the north side there are steep cliffs that are populated by cormorants , Aleutian alks and thousands of guillemots . Numerous bearded beeches have their nests on the stony coastal strip and the overgrown scree slopes .
One of the worst shipping disasters in Alaskan history occurred on December 17, 1964, when the 150- foot-long freighter San Patrick, sailing under the Liberian flag, broke on the rocky coast of Ulak; the entire crew of 32 men was killed.
