Map of Kasatochi Island |
Kasatochi Island is an uninhabited volcanic island of the Andreanof Islands , which belong to the Aleutian Islands . The approximately 2.4 km long island is 15 km northwest of Atka Island .
In 1802 the island was first recorded on a nautical chart by Gavriil Andrejewitsch Sarytschew as Kosatochyey .
volcano
The 288 m high stratovolcano dominating the island has a 750 m high, wide summit crater with a crater lake. The majority of the volcanic structure, however, consists of a submarine ridge of basaltic and andesitic rock.
The Kasatochi volcano last erupted in 2008.
Explosive eruption in 2008
From August 7, 2008, a relatively significant explosive eruption (VEI4) occurred. The main part of the eruption column rose to approx. 10,000 m and the top reached approx. 15,000 m. The biologists present had to leave the island in a hurry.
The last activity observed prior to this outbreak occurred in 1899.
