Talaud (occasionally Talaut or Salibabo ) is the name of an archipelago of smaller Indonesian islands that lie northeast of the Sangihe Islands . The main town is Melonguane .

geography

The islands are administered from Manado , as part of the North Sulawesi Province (Sulawesi Utara) . As Kepulauan Talaud, they form their own administrative district ( Kabupaten ).

300 km southwest of the Talaud Islands is Sulawesi , 210 km to the east Halmahera and 170 km to the north are the Philippines .

The land mass occupied by the Talaud Islands is approximately 1285 km². The largest island in the group is Karakelong (Karakelang) with 1025 km². To the south is Salebabu (Salibabo) and Kaburuang (Kabruang). To the northeast are the Nanusa Islands and further north, lonely, is the island of Miangas (Palmas), the northernmost island in the province.

Economy and Transport

Traditional trade goods in the Talaud Islands are ebony , ironwood , copra , sago and nutmegs . The islands are fertile and well supplied with agriculture . Fishing is also productive.

Melnonguane has one airport, Melonguane Airport .
