The earthquake was measured at 5.9–6.0 on the Richter scale . It was felt across the country - particularly in the Oblasts of Blagoevgrad , Kazanlak and Stara Sagora - as well as in some neighboring countries.

There were no reports of victims in Sofia or Pernik. According to the Bulgarian Seismic Institute, there is no connection between this earthquake and the earthquake in Emilia-Romagna on May 20, 2012.

This is the strongest earthquake in the oblasts Sofia and Pernik since the liberation of Bulgaria , stronger than the earthquake of 1917 with a magnitude of 5.2 M L .

The depth of the earthquake is 9.1 kilometers. According to other data, the magnitude is 5.8 M L .

causes

The earthquake in Pernik was closely related to the earthquake in northern Italy in 2012 . Both earthquakes occurred within a few hours. It reached a magnitude of 6.1 in northern Italy and 5.8 in western Bulgaria. An aftershock in Pernik with a magnitude of 4.3 on May 29 was also followed 24 minutes later by an aftershock in northern Italy.

Nevertheless, according to the Munich Re earthquake expert, Alexander Allmann, there is no causal link between the earthquakes in both countries.

The geophysicist Wolfgang Lenhardt from the Austrian Seismological Service also sees the coincidence of the earthquakes in Italy and Bulgaria as a pure coincidence. In an interview, he spoke of it in Bulgaria to a deportation came the earth's crust, what happens in the area extremely rare.
