Hunter Iceland (Germanized Hunter Island , French Ile Hunter ) even Fearn Iceland , is an uninhabited island in the south Pacific . With Matthew Island , 72.6 kilometers to the east , it forms the group of Matthew and Hunter Islands .

Hunter Island is 518 kilometers east of the French island of New Caledonia and 329 kilometers southeast of Aneityum , the southernmost island of Vanuatus . France sees the Matthew and Hunter Islands as part of their overseas territory , while Vanuatu claims them as part of their province of Tafea .
The island consists of a stratovolcano with a height of 297 m . Its last known eruption was in 1903. Volcanic activity can still be observed on the island. The main crater is 100 meters deep.
Flora and fauna
In 2013 a scientific expedition explored the island.
40 different plant species are known on the island, including lime-leaved marshmallow ( Hibiscus tiliaceus ), Pisonia grandis and Pandanus tectorius . There are also ferns Blechnum orientale , Histiopteris incisa and Aplopteris elongata and plants that were probably intentionally introduced by humans, such as the Indian coral tree ( Erythrina variegata ), Vigna adenantha and sponge gourd ( Luffa cylindrica ).
The animal world consists mainly of birds. These include Frigate (Fregata minor), lesser frigatebird ( Fregata ariel ), Masked Booby ( Sula dactylatra ), brown booby ( Sula leucogaster ), Red-footed Booby ( Sula sula ) Red-tailed tropic bird ( Phaethon rubricauda ), wedge-tailed shearwater ( Ardenna pacifica ) Schwarzflügel- Petrel ( Pterodroma nigripennis ), crest Petrel ( Pterodroma heraldica ) Anous albivittus , Noddi ( Anous stolidus ) Feenseeschwalbe ( Gygis alba ), happiness Schwalbe ( Hirundo neoxena ), South Sea Sumpfhuhn ( Porzana tabuensis ), white-faced ( Egretta novaehollandiae ) and Little Black Cormorant ( Phalacrocorax sulcirostris ). Rats also live on the island.
history
In 1798, John Fearn , captain of the British merchant ship Hunter , discovered the island while sailing from Sydney to Hawaii and named it after his ship.
