Epicenter of the earthquake on October 28, 2008

The 2008 earthquake in Pakistan with a magnitude M w 6.4 in the province of Balochistan occurred on October 29, 2008 at 4:09 am local time (23:09 UTC on October 28). According to the United States Geological Survey , the earthquake occurred 60 km north of Quetta and 185 km southeast of the Afghan city of Kandahar at a depth of 15 km.

Tectonic background

Earthquakes and active faults in western and northern Pakistan and the adjacent regions of Afghanistan are a result of the northward movement of the Indian plate , which collides with the Eurasian plate at a rate of about 40 mm per year . The Indian plate pushes itself under the Eurasian plate on the northern edge of the subcontinent and thus causes the uplift of the highest mountain ranges in the world, namely the Himalayas , the Karakoram , the Pamir and the Hindu Kush . To the west and south of the deformation front of the Himalayas, the relative movement of the two plates is oblique, which in this area leads to the usual leaf displacements , faults and combinations of both.

The radiation characteristics of the seismic energy during the earthquake on October 28th indicate that this event was primarily a shift in the leaf. Based on the seismological evaluation of the recorded seismograms, taking into account the tectonic framework conditions, a left-lateral offset on a north-east trending fault is the likely focus .

The October 28 quake occurred in the Sulaiman Fault , a Tertiary folding zone in which, in geologically recent times, sedimentary rock was folded and compressed by the force of the collision of the Indian and Eurasian land masses. It is located about 80 km east of the 650 km long Chaman Fault. According to the United States Geological Survey, this takes up a significant portion of the pressure from both plates. The occurrence of the earthquakes suggests that further side faults exist below the folding zone, which absorb some of the forces occurring in the area of mutual movement between India and Eurasia.

The earthquake and aftershocks occurred about 50 km northeast of the region hardest hit by a quake on May 30, 1935. Around 30,000 people were killed at the time and Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, was razed to the ground. This quake occurred as a result of a leaf movement on a northeast trending fault and had a magnitude of M W 7.6.

Personal injury and property damage

At least 215 people were killed in the earthquake, more than 200 were injured and 120,000 were left homeless.

details

Most of the victims come from two villages on the outskirts of the city of Ziarat . This area was badly affected by landslides that caused the earthquake. Hundreds of buildings were damaged.

The tremors were felt in Quetta , Ziarat , Pishin , Killa Abdullah , Mastung , Sibi , Kachhi as well as in Kuchlak and Loralai .

Reactions

The Pakistani government sent helicopters and soldiers to the disaster area to help those affected. However, some of those affected criticized that the government's aid was insufficient.
