The 2010 Pichilemu earthquake was a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 M w and occurred on March 11, 2010 . The epicenter was about 40 km southwest of Pichilemu in the Región de O'Higgins , Chile .

Course and circumstances of the quake

Shortly after the devastating earthquake of February 27, the center of Chile was again shaken by several severe tremors on March 11, 2010, which the US earthquake observatory (NEIC) measured with magnitudes between 4.9 and 6.9. After the recent earthquakes that occurred at noon during the inauguration of the new Chilean President Sebastián Piñera , the Chilean authorities issued a precautionary tsunami warning. The epicenter of the three most violent tremors with magnitudes of 6.9, 6.7 and 6.0 was on the coast of the VI. Region (Libertador O'Higgins) , around 40 km southwest of Pichilemu and around 140 km south of the city of Valparaíso , where the handover ceremony took place. People in Valparaíso and other coastal towns fled to the hills for fear of a tidal wave.

Although the epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a general warning of a tsunami . However, the warning center also indicated that there was a possibility of local tsunamis in the area between La Serena and Concepción .

The inauguration ceremony of the new President Piñera in front of the Chilean Congress building in Valparaíso continued as planned, as the television broadcast showed, despite the tremor, which was clearly noticeable shortly before the swearing-in ceremony, which was scheduled for 12:15 p.m. local time (3:15 p.m. UTC ).

Background and tectonics

Although the media often referred to the earthquake as the aftershock of the great earthquake of February 27, 2010, the United States Geological Survey assessed the earthquake as a stand-alone event in its preliminary geological assessment. Although the March 11 quake was caused by regional tensions resulting from the February 27 earthquake, it was not a direct consequence of the thrust between the South American plate and the Nazca plate , but was caused by normal faults in one of these plates. In the region around Pichilemu 10,000 aftershocks were localized, these are located in all depth ranges between 5 km and the plate boundary of the South American plate and the Nazca plate in 25 km and thus in the South American plate. These aftershocks took place on a south-westerly dipping area and mainly indicate extensional earthquake mechanisms.

Damage

The hardest hit location was Pichilemu, near the epicenter of the earthquake. The historically important parks of Parque Agustín Ross and part of the neighboring Ross Casino monument as well as many houses in the Espinillo and Rodeíllo districts were damaged. Two people were killed by the effects of the earthquake: one person died in Pichilemu and one man died of heart failure in Talca during the quake.

Aftershocks

There were ten aftershocks within the next six hours, two of which reached an intensity of 6.0 or higher on the moment magnitude scale, and seven others were between 5.0 and 6.0. During the following four days there were numerous aftershocks with an intensity of up to 5.0 MW . A total of 10,000 aftershocks with magnitudes between 1 and 5.7 were registered in the region around Pichilemu.
