The earth station Raisting is an earth station for communicating with communication satellites . With its widely visible parabolic antennas , it is a landmark of the Weilheimer Land at the southern end of the Ammersee .

history

After examining several locations in Germany, the decision was made to start construction south of Raisting in 1963, as the topographical conditions in the "Raistinger Wanne" with chains of hills in the east and west and the Alps in the south largely shielded terrestrial radio signals.

The earth station (also " earth station ") at Raisting was put into operation in 1964 by the Deutsche Bundespost . It was most recently part of the T-Systems division of Deutsche Telekom AG .

On January 12, 2006, the earth station was sold by T-Systems to the US telecommunications company Emerging Markets Communications Inc. (EMC). EMC provides satellite-based telecommunication solutions worldwide on behalf of aid organizations and various agencies of the United Nations .

The parabolic antenna served as a template for the 50-pfennig postage stamp of the definitive series Industry and Technology of the Deutsche Bundespost.

Antenna 1

The antenna 1 is located in a strutless, spherical air dome , the so-called radome . The building was built in 1963/64 according to plans by Hans Maurer . The antenna is no longer officially in operation, but students at the Technical University of Munich are currently working on putting the antenna back into operation. It was originally intended to serve as a ground station as part of the ESMO ( European Student Moon Orbiter ) mission of the European Space Agency ( ESA ). However, the ESMO project has been discontinued by the ESA. Instead, other projects are now being pursued in the radome.

The radome with its parabolic antenna with a diameter of 25 m was to be demolished, but was placed under monument protection in 1999. It is a technical monument . In 2009 the district council decided to preserve it as a technical museum. The entire transmitting and receiving system and the rotating mechanism are currently being renovated.

At the end of September 2010, the shell was replaced on behalf of Radom Raisting GmbH.

On February 28, 2020, a storm tore off the hull of the radome; it then lay down on the base of the building. Water penetrated the operating rooms and destroyed the electrical system.

The facility is to be used for

  • Radio astronomy
  • Observation of interplanetary missions
  • Amateur radio (intercontinental communication with the moon as a reflector and via amateur radio satellites)

Some data:

  • Antenna gain : at 4170 MHz 58 dBi, at 6390 MHz 61.5 dBi
  • Half width of the transmit and receive lobe: at 4170 MHz 0.2 degrees
  • Turning speed: max. 1.8 degrees / s
  • Setting accuracy: 0.02 degrees

Further earth stations

The Fuchsstadt earth station and the Usingen earth station were also built by the Deutsche Bundespost .
