The Eretmodini , also called goby cichlids in German , are a tribe of the cichlids (Cichlidae). Five of the six species of Eretmodini live endemically in Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, one, previously undescribed, in Lukuga , the outflow from Lake Tanganyika to the Congo . The monophyly is proven by various morphological features and examination of DNA sequences. The goby cichlids live on the bottom near the coast above a depth of 1.8 meters. You move with a jerky "hop" across the lake floor. All Eretmodini are mouthbrooders .

features

The Eretmodini are small cichlids with a stocky body and lengths of 7 to 10 cm. The mouth is below and can be pointed or broad. The outer teeth stand outwards and serve to grate growth from the rocky subsurface. The color of the fish is usually gray or brownish with vertical stripes on the sides of the body or light blue dots in the upper half of the body. The swim bladder is small.
