Erez

Erez (Hebrew: אֶרֶז dt. Cedar) is a kibbutz in southwest Israel.

Kibbutz

The kibbutz Erez was founded in 1950 at its current location. It is located in the northwestern Negev about 18 kilometers south of Ashkelon , 8 kilometers east of the Mediterranean Sea and only 2 kilometers north of the border with the Gaza Strip . Erez falls under the jurisdiction of the Sha'ar HaNegev regional administration .

The local economy is geared towards agriculture (cultivation of potatoes, citrus fruits, avocados and vegetables, milk and honey production) and industry (especially the plastics production company). The kibbutz is also engaged in argonomic research.

The Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics gives the following population figures for Erez in the censuses of May 22, 1961, May 19, 1972, June 4, 1983, November 4, 1995 and December 28, 2008:

Border crossing

The border crossing

On April 12, 2002, a Palestinian opened fire on several Israelis and Palestinian workers, killing an Israeli and a Palestinian. At around 7:00 a.m. local time, the assassin entered the border crossing and began to shoot those present. He also threw a hand grenade into the crowd before he was shot by Israeli border police.

After the 2004 decoupling plan was approved, there were intensified terrorist attacks on the Erez crossing.

In 2007, the border crossing was renovated for $ 60 million.

industrial area

As a result of increased attacks, the decision was made to close the Erez industrial zone and relocate the factories that still existed there to other locations such as Ashkalon, Dimona, Jerocham or Sderot. Many factories had been closed in advance.
