Eri Yoshida ( Japanese 吉田 え り , Yoshida Eri ; born January 17, 1992 in Yokohama , Kanagawa Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese baseball player. She was the first woman to be drafted by a Japanese professional team . She is also one of the few pitchers who specialize in knuckleballs . Yoshida is currently under contract with the Chico Outlaws , a minor league team that is independent of the MLB . Her nickname is Knuckle Hime ( ナ ッ ク ル 姫 , Nakkuru hime , "Knuckle Princess").

Kobe 9 Cruise (2008-2009)

At the age of 16, Eri Yoshida was drafted in 2008 by the Kobe 9 Cruise, a team from the Kansai Independent Baseball League , as the first woman in Japanese professional baseball . Yoshihiro Nakata, the manager of 9 Cruise, justified this step with her outstanding side-armed Knuckler , who made her stand out from the crowd. According to Yoshida, he began practicing this throw after watching MLB pitcher Tim Wakefield , who is considered to be the best knuckleball pitcher in the past 20 years, in his pitches.

Yoshida made her professional debut on March 26, 2009 at the Osaka Dome in Osaka in front of 11,592 spectators, where she pitched during two generic at-bats. The first batter came to base with a walk after four balls in a row , and Yoshida took out the second with a strikeout .

Chico Outlaws (since 2010)

Eri Yoshida signed on April 8, 2010 a contract with the Chico Outlaws, a team in the Golden Baseball League , which is based in Chico, California . This made her the first active woman on a US professional team since Ila Borders stepped down in 2000. Yoshida is also the first woman ever to have played professional baseball in two nations. Yoshida made her debut with the Outlaws on July 27th of that year. Before that, she had the opportunity to train together with her idol Tim Wakefield in Spring Training at the Boston Red Sox training ground .

Your first season at Chico was a difficult one. After a total of eight starts, she could not record a win with 4 losses and ended the season with an ERA of 12.28. As a result, she was removed from the squad for the playoffs .
