Eric Bergren

Eric Lee Bergren (born April 27, 1954 in Pasadena , California , † July 14, 2016 there ) was an American screenwriter .

Life

Bergren was born in Pasadena, California in 1954. He studied drama at the University of Southern California .

Based on the notes of Frederick Treves and Ashley Montagu about the case of Joseph Merrick , Bergren wrote the screenplay for the film drama The Elephant Man together with David Lynch and Christopher De Vore . At the 1981 Academy Awards , Bergren, Lynch and De Vore were nominated for an Oscar in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. However, as in the seven other nominated categories, the film did not receive any awards. The script was also nominated in the script categories of the Golden Globe Awards and the British Academy Film Awards.

Together with Christopher De Vore and Nicholas Kazan , Bergren then wrote the screenplay for Frances , a biography by Frances Farmer .

In 1988 he directed the short film ... They Haven't Seen This ... , for which he also wrote the script.

Bergren died in July 2016 in his hometown at the age of 62 from complications from liver cancer , which had been diagnosed a few months earlier. He left behind his wife and two daughters.
