Eric Struelens

Éric Struelens (born November 3, 1969 in Watermael-Boitsfort ) is a former Belgian basketball player .

Life

Struelens first played in his home country at Arena Wemmel and Excelsior Brussels, his breakthrough came in the late 1980s and in the first half of the 1990s with the first division club Racing Mechelen . With Mechelen, the 2.08 meter tall indoor player won the Belgian championship in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994 and the national cup competition in 1990, 1993 and 1994. Struelens was the best rebounder in the Belgian league in the 1990/91 and 1994/95 seasons, and in 1991 and 1992 he was named the best player of the season. In 1995 he moved to Spirou Charleroi in Belgium and won the championship title and the cup with the club in the 1995/96 season.

In the summer break of 1996, Struelens took the step abroad and joined Paris Basket Racing from the LNB ProA , the top division in France. The Belgian was also a top performer in Paris, scoring 11.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in his first year as French champion. In his second Paris season 1997/98 he came to averages of 8.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per encounter.

From 1998 to 2002 Struelens was under contract with Real Madrid . In 2000 he was Spanish champion with the capital city team. In terms of statistical values, his personally most successful season at Real was the first (1998/99), when he reached an average of 12.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per encounter in 34 main round games in the ACB league . After his time in Madrid, Struelens stayed in Spain and played for Casademont Girona from 2002 to 2005 . In spring 2005 he moved to Panellinios Athens in Greece, followed by five years at BBC Royal Brussels in his home country.

As a coach, Struelens worked for lower-class teams in Belgium as well as in the youth field and as assistant coach of the national team, in October 2013 he became the sporting director of the first division club Kangoeroes Willebroek and stayed in office for a year. At the end of June 2018, he was hired as assistant coach by the French first division club BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque and stayed in office for a year.

National team

Struelens wore the colors of the Belgian national team in 52 international matches.
