The Erich Schulze fountain - also known as the GEMA fountain due to its location in front of the GEMA building and its relationship with GEMA - is a fountain system in the Haidhausen district of Munich .

Location and facility

Outlet basin
Fountain in the courtyard of the GEMA building. Behind the breakthrough: the rest of the system

The fountain is located between the Gasteig and the GEMA administration building on Rosenheimer Straße. It is the work of the Munich artist Albert Hien .

From the horn of a 7.5 meter high tuba from brass about half a meter bubbles up the water in the air. Then it runs through the multiple windings of the tuba, which run three times under the floor before it pours out of the mouthpiece. The water is collected in a stone basin that is shaped like a concert grand without a cover.

About 70 meters further east - beyond a breakthrough in the GEMA building - there is another fountain in the form of an oversized bronze horn with a gold-plated hand bellows; it is part of the system and was originally intended to be connected to the tuba and grand piano by a narrow watercourse that was not implemented for technical reasons.

history

The fountain's namesake, Erich Schulze , was commissioned to set up GEMA after the Second World War and was its board member and general director from its foundation in 1947 until the end of 1989 .

GEMA named Erich Schulze its honorary president in January 1990 and dedicated the fountain in front of its newly built administration building to him, which was inaugurated in June of the same year. In copyright circles and among musicians, Schulze is known as Mr. GEMA .
