Erich Schulze (association official)

Erich Schulze (born February 1, 1913 in Berlin ; † December 8, 2017 in Grünwald ) was a German association official ; he was the first chairman and general director of GEMA . He was known by lawyers and musicians under the name of Mr. GEMA due to his many years of work at GEMA .

Life

After attending secondary school , Schulze began his professional life as a legal assistant . For many years he was in a leading position, u. a. as director for Bohemia and Moravia, in the "State-approved Society for the Exploitation of Musical Performance Rights" (STAGMA) founded by Joseph Goebbels in September 1933 . In 1947 he was commissioned to set up GEMA. He resigned his position as sole director and general director of the company at the end of 1989 after more than 40 years and had been honorary president of the company since early 1990. During the time under Schulze's leadership, GEMA's royalties rose from 16 million RM at the beginning to over 500 million DM .

Schulze influenced the legislation in the area of ​​copyright as an advisor to politicians - for example as a member of the expert commission of the Federal Ministry of Justice - but also as a plaintiff before the Federal Constitutional Court . He is the author of numerous specialist publications in the field of copyright. Schulze's successor as GEMA board member was Reinhold Kreile .

In 1998, Erich Schulze founded the foundation named after him for the promotion of the sciences through the protection of art and cultural workers and entrusted the Philipps University of Marburg with the foundation's tasks , including the awarding of the Erich Schulze Prize, worth 2,500 euros, for outstanding work heard in the fields of copyright law and musicology ; in 2011 the award was given to the musicologist Christian Lemmerich.

Erich Schulze was married, had four children and had lived in the Upper Bavarian community of Grünwald since 1956 .
