Erich Eiswaldt

Erich Karl Maria Eiswaldt (born June 23, 1894 in Shanghai ; † August 18, 1974 in Rottach-Egern ) was a German diplomat and ambassador in Kabul , the capital of Afghanistan .

Life

Eiswaldt was the son of the German consul general Rudolf Eiswaldt and the Italian diplomat's daughter Marie Galliani; Nephew of Major General Rudolf Eiswaldt. He was closely associated with the family of General of the Infantry Friedrich Siebert, brother of the Bavarian Prime Minister Ludwig Siebert , with whom he lived in Germany during his father's activities abroad. Before he started working as ambassador, Erich Eiswaldt was in-house counsel for the Munich Chamber of Commerce and Industry and counselor in Italy.

In 1912 he received his Abitur at the Munich Cadet Corps , as the first of his year, and began studying economics in Munich with the degree Dr. oec. publ., which he graduated with summa cum laude in 1933. From 1912 to 1919 Eiswaldt was an active officer as Ordonnanzoffizier in the general staff , member of the German military delegation in Turkey . He was dismissed as captain of the reserve at the age of 25 and served on the Western Front from 1939 to 1940 .

Eiswaldt was from 1922 to 1923 university assistant at the economic history seminar in Munich. In 1923 he joined the Munich Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he became deputy in-house counsel in 1931 and in-house counsel from 1941 to 1950. In 1950 Eiswaldt went to Rome as counselor and head of the economic department with Clemens von Brentano , who became Germany's first ambassador to Italy after the Second World War , where he helped set up the German business representation. In 1957 Eiswaldt became the German envoy in Kabul and the first German representative with the rank of ambassador in Afghanistan. He campaigned for the King of Afghanistan to upgrade the listing of the German legation to the European diplomatic missions, so that the German mission was elevated to the status of an embassy in 1958. In return, the Afghan representation in Germany also gains embassy status.

In 1957 Eiswaldt was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Italian Order of Merit and on December 7, 1959, the King of Afghanistan awarded him the Order of Sardan-e-Ala in gold.
