Erich Hamann (born January 6, 1880 in Memel , East Prussia , † December 20, 1949 in Berlin ) was a German entrepreneur and chocolatier .

Life

Hamann, son of a shipowner and captain , learned the trade of confectioner . In 1912 he managed to set up his own business and became the founder of the chocolate factory named after him in Berlin. Initially located on Kurfürstenstraße, it has been based in Berlin-Wilmersdorf at Brandenburgische Straße 17 since 1928. The shop on the ground floor of the factory , designed by Johannes Itten in the Bauhaus style in 1928 , is still true to the original and is therefore still a destination today Architecture enthusiast. In the shop, products from the company's own house are mainly offered, which are characterized by a flavor that is known as "fine bitter". Like the shop, many of the manufactory's products and packaging design have remained unchanged since the founding days. In the heyday of the chocolate metropolis Berlin, the products of the Erich Hamann house were sold in up to eight of its own shops in Berlin. Today, in addition to the manufactory's shop in the Berlin area, they are in specialist shops or in the specialist departments of large department stores , such as B. the KaDeWe , as well as in mail order specialized in high-priced products .

After a stroke by Erich Hamann and his death in 1949, his wife Anna née took over. Kanter (November 7, 1877 - October 9, 1964) was in charge of the business and until 1960 managed the house through the difficult post-war years.

Both are buried with other celebrities in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf near Berlin; the Erich Hamann chocolate factory is still run by the third generation of the family.
