Erich Hocke (born August 20, 1934 , † August 9, 1999 ) was a German philosopher , political scientist , peace researcher and colonel in the National People's Army .

He worked as a university professor (1961), associate professor (1980) and dean (1990) at the military academy "Friedrich Engels" (MAFE) of the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic in Dresden (1961–1990).

Life

Origin and education

Erich Hocke was born on August 20, 1934 in Reichenberg (today: Liberec ). He finished school with a high school diploma .

Scientific and military career

In the summer of 1959, after studying at the Humboldt University in Berlin , Hocke passed the state examination as a graduate philosopher . Even during his studies he worked as an assistant, supervising Soviet visiting professors and translating their lectures.

With the establishment of the pre-study faculty Naumburg / Saale (as part of the military academy "Friedrich Engels" Dresden) he started working there as a civilian teacher. Before that he gained his first military experience as a tank commander.

In November 1961 he began his university teaching career at the military academy "Friedrich Engels" in Dresden with a teaching position as a main subject teacher for philosophy / epistemology. In 1962 he took part in a military course, was then accepted into active military service and appointed first lieutenant.

Hocke was appointed head of the department in 1969 and, after completing an (part-time) unscheduled aspiration, received his first academic title of Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.) At the Military Academy in 1971 . The university lecturer for dialectical and historical materialism was Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Squat appointed in 1973.

His doctorate B (1977) at the military academy "Friedrich Engels" for a doctorate in philosophical sciences (Dr. sc. Phil.) With a joint work with Wolfgang Scheler (on philosophical problems of war and peace in the present) established a line of thought in peace research, which gained influence in the NVA and in the intellectual life of the GDR. In the same year he was appointed to the Scientific Council at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR.

Erich Hocke was appointed associate professor at the military academy "Friedrich Engels" in 1980. In 1983 he was appointed head of the chair of Scientific Communism and was appointed full professor (1985).

In the fall of 1989 he received the founding professorship in the Chair of Political Science at the Military Academy and was elected Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences .

Erich Hocke was one of the masterminds on the issue of peace - war - armed forces. He was one of the first scientists in the NVA who recognized and addressed the fact that in the atomic age war can lead to the downfall of mankind and has therefore become unsuitable as a political tool. Since the beginning of the eighties he has made a significant contribution to overcoming the old military and security thinking.

In 1989/90, Colonel Erich Hocke was one of the initiators of the reforms in the NVA and the democratic military reform in the GDR. In February 1990 Erich Hocke was appointed to the Interdisciplinary Research Area Security Policy (IWBS) initiated by Rolf Lehmann at the Military Academy , which was conceived as a forerunner for an institute for security policy to be created. Its work results, including contributions by Hocke, were published publicly in the series of publications of the Military Academy Working Papers IWBS .

With the dissolution of the National People's Army in the course of the national unification of Germany, he was released on September 30, 1990, before the NVA was decommissioned. (Colonel ret.)

After his discharge from military service, Erich Hocke remained socially, scientifically and journalistically active even without the possibilities of an academic institution.

In October 1990, Hocke was an active founding member of the Dresdener Studiengemeinschaft Sicherheitspektiven e. V. (DSS) in order to represent the convictions gained in public discourse with like-minded officers and scientists who have also been dismissed. He was a board member (from 1990) and deputy chairman of the board (1998–1999).

Hocke published a large number of his own contributions in booklets of the DSS working papers and, in public appearances, played a large part in the security and peace policy work of the Dresden Study Group on Security Policy, z. B. as a moderator at the panel on the World Day of Peace (1993, 1995, 1996).

Erich Hocke died in 1999 and was buried in the Trinity Cemetery in Dresden.
