The Friedrich Engels Prize was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded in the form of a medal . It was donated on May 8, 1970 in three classes.
The award was made by the Minister for National Defense , first on the occasion of the Friedrich Engels Conference on November 6, 1970 in Dresden, and later always on November 28, the birthday of Friedrich Engels.

Award terms

The Friedrich-Engels-Prize could be awarded for excellent scientific and scientific organizational achievements to strengthen the national defense. The award of the prize was associated with a cash prize, which was as follows:

  • GDR Engels Prize bar-G.png 1st class (3 awards per year permitted)
    • for collective awards: up to 25,000 marks
    • for individuals: 10,000 marks
  • GDR Engels Prize bar S.png Class II (6 awards per year permitted)
    • for collective awards: up to 15,000 marks
    • for individuals: 6,000 marks
  • GDR Engels Prize bar B.pngIII. Class (12 awards allowed per year)
    • for collective awards: up to 10,000 marks
    • for individuals: 4,000 marks

Appearance and wearing style

The first class medal of the prize is made of gold-plated silver , the second class is made of silver and the III. The bronze class with a diameter of 30 mm showed the embossed portrait of Friedrich Engels on its obverse . The quality of the medal changed from 1973 onwards, so that from this point on only gold-plated, silver-plated and bronzed hard metal was used. The reverse of the medal shows the state coat of arms of the GDR framed by the inscription: FOR THE PROTECTION (above) OF WORKERS AND FARMING POWER (below). The inscription is surrounded by two laurel branches that are crossed at the bottom and open at the top. On the edge of the medal the words: FRIEDRICH ENGELS PRICE have been stamped . The medal was worn on a pentagonal pentagonal light blue 24 mm wide clasp on the upper right side of the chest. Two vertical yellow 2.5 mm wide central stripes are woven into the light blue ribbon, each of which is 2.5 mm from the edge. The interim clasp is of the same quality, but shows the attached miniature of the obverse of the medal in the center.
