Erich Hofmann (Linguist)

Erich Hofmann (born March 4, 1895 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia ; † November 7, 1982 in Kiel ) was a German linguist and professor at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

Life

In 1926 Hofmann completed his habilitation in linguistics at the University of Göttingen under Eduard Hermann and became a private lecturer. The NSDAP he joined after the seizure of power in the 1933rd In November 1933 he signed the professors' declaration of Adolf Hitler at German universities and colleges . In 1935 he became associate professor and lecturer association leader at the University of Marburg . In 1937 he became a full professor at the University of Münster , and in 1940 he moved to the German University in Prague . In the Reich Ministry of Education from 1943 he acted as a consultant for the humanities. In 1950 he was appointed to Kiel, where he was also rector in 1954/55. In 1963 he retired .

His specialty was the Baltic languages . Together with Ernst Fraenkel he edited the Lithuanian Etymological Dictionary . He also worked on the history of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel.
