School history

Chronicle of the school

On the occasion of the first city week in 1970, the then Prime Minister Helmut Kohl broke ground for the construction of the Hermeskeil school center. Just two years later, the specialist class wing of the school center with work rooms, language laboratory, photo laboratory, typing room, music room, kitchens and science rooms was completed. In 1974 the school's sports hall was inaugurated during a ceremony. This year the school took part for the first time in the sports competition " Youth trains for the Olympics ". In October 1972 Karl Heinz Dahlke was appointed first Realschule director; five years later he dismissed the first high school graduates. As early as 1977, the school was equipped with computers with the help of donations. In order to do justice to the strongly increased number of pupils, the school was expanded in 1984 by an extension with six classrooms and subject rooms. With 32 classes and 1,100 students, the Hermeskeil secondary school was the largest school in the Trier administrative district at this time. In a school beautification campaign in 1992, the students redesigned their gray concrete walls in the classrooms with bright colors. A year later the secondary school was renamed "Erich Kästner Realschule". Since 2006 the Erich Kästner Realschule Hermeskeil has been participating in the school development project “Self-Responsible School” of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Education.

Since the school year 2010/2011, the Rektor-Bach-Hauptschule and the Erich Kästner Realschule have formed the Hermeskeil Integrated Comprehensive School .

Development of elective subjects

The students of the Erich Kästner Realschule Hermeskeil can choose study groups in grades five and six. From the seventh year of school, two elective subjects are chosen, each taught for two hours. The range of subjects initially consisted of French, mathematics / natural sciences, technical drawing, technical works, family house management and word processing. From 1994 it was expanded to include fine arts / design and information technology.

French, mathematics / natural sciences, computer science, social education, economics and social studies, and office studies / word processing are available for grades nine and ten. In these grade levels, the students only attend one elective, which is taught for four hours in the ninth grade and three hours in the tenth grade.

School partnerships

For two decades, the Erich Kästner Realschule Hermeskeil maintained friendly relationships with two partner schools in France : the Collège d'enseignement secondaire in Piennes and the Collège d'enseignement secondaire in Yutz . Several times a year there was a student exchange with participation in classes and stays with the families. By 1994, 500 students had participated in the exchange project. Since autumn 2002 there has been a new exchange with the French partner school Julie Daubié in Rombas near Metz .

Educational work

School development project self-reliant school (SVS)

Since the beginning of the 2006/07 school year, the Erich Kästner Realschule Hermeskeil has participated as one of ten schools in the school development project “Self-Responsible School”. The aim of the project is to break new ground in the individual advancement of students.

This means in particular that, if possible, no pupil should leave school without a qualification, that the educational path should be followed without interruptions due to deferrals or repetitions, and that all possibilities for individual support are anchored in the school quality program and in teaching practice and applied. The schools should also gain experience in dealing with greater personal, organizational and teaching and didactic independence. Schools are to be given more creative freedom in organizing lessons.

The schools themselves can decide on the type, scope and number of performance reviews. At the Erich Kästner Realschule Hermeskeil in January 2007 the SVS steering group set the three school priorities “technical and methodological skills”, “life skills” and “school organization”. The core focus consists primarily of measures in the subjects of German, mathematics, English and natural sciences. The aim is to stabilize or improve the skills of the students. The objectives of the core focus should be achieved via the learning method system, the school method curriculum and computer-aided learning in certain subjects and grades.

European Computer Driving License (ECDL)

Since October 2007 the Erich Kästner Realschule has been an authorized examination center for the European Computer Driving License ( ECDL ). This internationally recognized certificate attests to basic IT skills.

The training takes place in the modules "Basics of Information Technology", "Computer Use and File Management", "Word Processing", "Spreadsheet", "Database", "Presentation" and "Information and Communication". It takes place on a voluntary basis and is integrated into the optional subjects of office studies and IT. For the training in all modules of the ECDL, the students have to pay a contribution of 130 euros, training in individual modules is also possible.

The acquisition of the European computer driving license should bring advantages for the students at the start of their professional life. With the offer for ECDL certification, the Erich Kästner Realschule is sticking to the consistent integration of the computer into the learning offer.

Exercise room program

The training room program, which has been used in Germany since 1996, is intended to enable undisturbed teaching.

The primary goals of the training room program are, on the one hand, to protect the students who are willing to learn and to offer them relaxed, undisturbed and qualified lessons. On the other hand, disruptive students are often offered help aimed at improving their social behavior and acquiring the necessary key social qualifications.

The following rules are established for order in the class:

  • Every student has the right to study undisturbed.
  • Every teacher has the right to teach undisturbed.
  • Everyone must always respect the rights of the other.
  • If these rules are violated, the student concerned must decide whether he wants to abide by the rules or whether he goes to the training room. In order to be able to return to the class, he has to create a return plan that shows the goal of the student not to disturb in the future. On the basis of this return plan, an agreement is made with the teacher concerned that affects the future behavior of the student.

Working groups

The school's permanent offerings include, for example, basketball, choir, English, fitness, French, football, ecology, orchestra, radio, politics, the school newspaper "Litfaßsäule", dance sport, tactile writing / word processing, theater or volleyball.

The parents of the students also attend a dance class offered by the teachers.
