Erich Kõlar

Erich Kõlar (born May 18, 1924 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian conductor and percussionist .

Life and music

Erich Kõlar was born to an Estonian father and a Latvian mother. The parents and a brother were after the Soviet occupation of Estonia into the Soviet interior 1940-41 deported .

Erich Kõlar completed in 1951 his studies in conducting with roman matsov at the State Conservatory of Tallinn ( Tallinna Riiklik Konservatoorium ) from. From 1944 to 1951 he played percussion in the Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra . He was also the head of the popular jazz formation Kuldne Seitse ("The Golden Seven"). From 1951 to 1956 he lived as a music teacher and artistic director of a workers' association in Kirov Oblast in Russia . He then returned to the Estonian SSR .

In 1956/57 he worked as a percussionist with the Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra. He taught music in 1956/57 in Tallinn and from 1958 to 1965 in Tartu, South Estonia . From 1957 Kõlar was conductor at the Vanemuine Opera and Concert Hall in Tartu, from 1958 to 1980 and from 1981 to 1984 its chief conductor.

Awards

In 1968 Erich Kõlar was awarded the "Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR" award.

Private life

Erich Kõlar was married to the Estonian pianist Leelo Kõlar (* 1927). In his second marriage he married the Russian prima ballerina Elena Poznjak-Kõlar. Both sons are the composer Margo Kõlar (* 1961). Erich Kõlar has three other children.
