Erich Karschies

Erich Karschies (born February 8, 1909 in Laugszargen , Tilsit district , today in the Rajongemeinde Tauragė , † November 5, 1942 ) was a German teacher and writer .

Life

Erich Karschies was born on February 8, 1909 in Laugszargen in the Tilsit district. He first attended the elementary school in Groß Schilleningken in the district of Heydekrug , then switched to the school in Memel and then to the teacher training college there, which he completed in 1932 with the second teaching examination. After further exams in Königsberg , he worked as a teacher from 1935 and was appointed school councilor in 1937. In addition to teaching, Karschies published articles such as B. in the " Memeler Dampfboot " and in the "Grenzgarten", mainly in Low Prussian Low German, to avoid state censorship. After the Memelland was reconnected to the German Reich , Karschies joined the NSDAP . In 1940 his first novel was published, the successful "Fischmeister", which made him known nationwide. In the following year his second novel “Behind is always the sun” appeared, which dealt with the fate of ethnic Germans . Karschies enlisted in the Wehrmacht in 1941 and fought with the infantry on the Eastern Front .

Erich Karschies fell on November 5, 1942. He was posthumously honored with the Johann Gottfried von Herder Prize in 1943/44 . When the Germans were expelled from East Prussia, his wife and children fled to Flensburg .

After the end of the Second World War, Karschies' book “Behind is always the sun” was placed on the list of literature to be sorted out in the Soviet occupation zone .
