The Johann Gottfried von Herder Prize was set up in 1935 by the "FVS Foundation" .

Importance of the price

The prize, named after Johann Gottfried Herder , was a culture prize intended primarily for German speakers who lived outside the borders of the German Empire , specifically for the Free City of Danzig , the Baltic States and the Soviet Union . It was donated by the Hamburg businessman Alfred Toepfer (1894–1993). The group of recipients included historians, preservationists, writers, folklore researchers and university lecturers who were honored for special services in their special field. The award was made by the Albertus University of Königsberg .
