Edmund Spohr (botanist)

Edmund Charles Spohr (born October 23, jul. / 4. November  1887 greg. In Parnu , † 21st April 1964 in Goettingen ) was a Baltic German botanist and professor.

Life

After attending grammar school in Pernau, Edmund Spohr studied botany and anthropology at Moscow University and Dorpat University . After botanical expeditions to Siberia and the Caucasus , he completed his studies with a doctorate as Dr. phil. nat. from. He returned to Pernau in 1917 and was a senior teacher at the German School from 1918 to 1919. In 1920 he went to Dorpat as a private lecturer . From 1923 to 1929 he was a lecturer in the systematics and geography of plants and director of the Tartu Botanical Garden . From 1928 to 1939 he was head of the Dorpater Deutsche Hochschulhilfe, which he co-founded in 1828. From 1929 to 1939 he headed the Institute for Scientific Local Research, which he founded in 1929, at the Livonian Charitable and Economic Society. He was also a full professor at the Herder Institute in Riga from 1930 to 1939 . Spohr was a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Estonian German Cultural Self-Government, since 1933 a corresponding member of the Natural Scientists' Association, since 1934 a corresponding member of the Estonian Literary Society and a liaison professor of the German National Academic Foundation . For many years he was first secretary and in 1938/39 head of the Dorpater lecturers' evening. He also represented Estonia in the North-East German Research Association (NOFG). From 1941 to 1945 Spohr was Professor of Plant Geography at the University of Posen and Director of the Botanical Garden. He was dean and a member of the Senate. He lived in Göttingen from 1945 until his death. From 1949 to 1951 he was a research officer at the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture. From 1959 he was emeritus. In the same year he became a member of the Curonia Goettingensis , founded on August 1, 1959 as the traditional bearer of the Baltic Corps .
