Erich Lange (geologist)

Erich Lange (born January 9, 1889 in Berlin ; † November 16, 1965 ) was a German geologist and politician ( SED ). From 1946 to 1948 he was a member of the Saxon state parliament .

Life

Lange, son of a staunch socialist, studied geology at the Bergakademie Berlin and at the University of Berlin . He was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . Before the First World War he worked as a geologist in Africa. During the war he was deployed in the protection force in Cameroon and was interned. In 1921 he became a member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). From 1924 to 1930 he worked as an expert for mineral raw materials at the Soviet trade agency in Berlin. Erich Lange was with the Prussian Geological State Institute from 1937 to 1939 . He was head of an oil business and later worked as a geologist at the Reich Office for Soil Research in Berlin. From 1944 he was a research assistant at the Geological Institute of the Bergakademie Freiberg . After the Second World War and the reopening of the Bergakademie, he campaigned for the faculty to be cleared of the forces of National Socialism and in January 1946 he was appointed full professor and director of the Institute for Fuel Geology from the authorized representative for the fuel industry and energy of the SMAD , General Kurmazew of the Bergakademie Freiberg. In October 1946 he was elected to the state parliament of Saxony with the mandate of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).

After Otto Barsch's death in October 1946, he became President of the State Geological Institute (GLA) in Berlin. Thereupon he resigned his state parliament mandate on December 8, 1948. After the dissolution of the GLA and the formation of the State Geological Commission of the GDR in October 1950, he lost his post as president and took over the management of the geological service. Until 1959 he was a member of the State Geological Commission of the GDR. From 1955 he was the first editor-in-chief of the " Zeitschrift für Angewandte Geologie ".
