Erich Meyer (born October 29, 1897 in Berlin , † February 4, 1967 in Hamburg ) was a German art historian .

Life

Erich Meyer, from a Westphalian merchant family on his father's side and a Rhenish merchant family on his mother's side, attended grammar school in Berlin-Pankow . After participating in the First World War , he studied art history, philology and philosophy from 1919, first in Munich with Heinrich Wölfflin and from 1920 in Berlin with Adolph Goldschmidt , from whom he received his doctorate in 1924. Financially independent, he went on extensive study trips through Europe. In 1927 Erich Meyer became a scientific assistant at the Palace Museum in Berlin under Otto von Falke , and in 1941 was appointed curator there and was responsible for the Middle Ages department. From April 1, 1947 until his early retirement due to health problems at the end of 1961, he was director of the Museum of Art and Industry in Hamburg. With the help of the Foundation for the Promotion of the Hamburg Art Collections , he was able to acquire numerous new pieces and entire collections for the museum.

His scientific interest was particularly the bronze devices of the Middle Ages. He worked with Otto von Falke on a corpus of this group and edited the Aquamanile in animal form for the first volume . The material he had collected over the years for the second volume was lost during World War II.
