Erich Rumpel (born December 1, 1930 in Alt-Hammer / Silesia ; † August 22, 2017 in Hamburg ) was a German trade unionist and former member of the Hamburg Parliament for the SPD .

Life

In 1947 Erich Rumpel came to Hamburg as a refugee. After attending elementary school, he started an apprenticeship as a locksmith and then worked in electricity and port construction, most recently he worked in the main warehouse of the GEG , which was a trade union company. His colleagues there elected him from 1958 to 1963, initially to the works council and later as the works council chairman. In 1961/1962 the union sent him to study at the Academy of Labor (AdA) in Frankfurt / Main . In 1963 he rose to the position of secretary of the food-enjoyment-restaurants union (NGG). In 1964 he moved to the regional organization of the SPD Hamburg as managing director, responsible for political work in the company and trade union. In 1972 he moved to the Public Services, Transport and Traffic Union (ÖTV; today ver.di ) as a department manager for the port area . The Museum of Labor and the Harbor Museum were matters close to his heart.

Rumpel was married and had two children.

politics

In 1948 Erich Rumpel joined the SPD. At first he worked for the Young Socialists in Hamburg-St. Georg , then he was Falken Secretary in Kassel for a year . He returned to Hamburg. In 1973 he was elected to the Hamburg SPD state executive and in 1977 to the federal executive of the AfA .

He is convinced that SPD operational groups must have a permanent and dignified place in the party structure. Without participation by the Social Democrats in the companies and unions, the SPD runs the risk of losing its most important voter potential if it wants to stay in constant conversation with the employees. That was always his guideline, which he also openly represented in his publications.

From 1974 to 1991 he was a member of the Hamburg parliament. He worked primarily on the labor and social affairs and property and public companies committees .
