Erich Thies

Erich Thies (born September 20, 1943 in Rotenburg (Wümme) ) is a German science manager and university professor. He was State Secretary in the Berlin Senate Department for Science, Research and Culture for several years and was Secretary General of the Conference of Ministers of Education from 1998 to 2011 . Scientifically, he mainly dealt with Ludwig Feuerbach .

Life

Thies received his Abitur in 1963 at the Ratsgymnasium in Rotenburg. From 1963 to 1970 he studied philosophy , art history , German literature and education at the universities of Tübingen, Berlin and Heidelberg . In 1970 he passed the first state examination for teaching at secondary schools in the subjects of German and philosophy. He then worked as a research assistant at Dieter Henrich's chair at Heidelberg University, where he also received his doctorate in philosophy in 1973.

In 1976 he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Heidelberg University of Education . From 1978 to 1986 he was rector of the University of Education in Heidelberg, and from 1978 to 1982 also chairman of the state rectors' conference of the universities of education in Baden-Württemberg. Thies was involved in several science policy committees, so between 1987 and 1998 he was a member of several working groups of the Science Council . Since 1991 he has been "Planning Officer for the Faculty of Education" at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1992 he was appointed State Secretary in the Senate Administration for Science, Research and Culture by the then Berlin Senator for Science, Manfred Erhardt , an office that he held until 1998.

In 1994 he was appointed to a professorship for philosophy and education at the Humboldt University in Berlin, an office which he held until February 2009. In October 1998 he became General Secretary of the German Conference of Ministers of Education .
