Erich Leo Ludwig Uhmann (born November 4, 1881 in Chemnitz , † January 15, 1968 in Stollberg ) was a German entomologist .

Life

Erich Uhmann was born in Chemnitz on November 4, 1881, his mother died shortly after the birth, so that he and his father grew up with friends and acquaintances in Plauen , a suburb of the time and now part of the Saxon state capital Dresden , where he grew up the Wettiner Attended high school. When he took his school leaving examination in 1902, his father lost his modest fortune as an engineer through a dispute with his previous company, the Berliner Allgemeine Elektrizitätsgesellschaft (AEG). Therefore it was not financially possible for Erich Uhmann to study. So he initially became a laborer at the tax office of the city of Dresden.

He dealt with entomology at an early stage. Because of his friendship with the children of the Böttcher family, his parents provided him with funding to study mathematics and natural science at the University of Leipzig , which he began at Easter 1903.

In 1907 he became a provisional teacher in Chemnitz and a year later he switched to teaching at the secondary school and later high school in Stollberg, which then became his place of work. In the middle of World War II, he retired there in 1943.

As an entomologist, he worked in a variety of fields, such as researching the boreological beetle fauna of the Ore Mountains . He traveled with other nature lovers to many European countries to collect insects. The director of the German Entomological Institute advised him to examine the turtle beetles (Hispinae), a subspecies of the leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae). He has been practically the only expert in the world on this group of beetles since his first essay on the subject was published in 1926.

After his death in 1968, the German Entomological Institute (DEI) took over his extensive beetle collection.

Honors

On the occasion of his 80th birthday in 1961, he was awarded an honorary doctorate at the suggestion of the German Cultural Association in Stollberg.
