Erich Zakowski (born November 25, 1934 in East Prussia ) is the founder and long-time leader of the Zakspeed racing team named after him .

After the Second World War , Zakowski fled to Hamburg and Dortmund with his mother and four siblings . Finally, the family settled in Niederzissen , the current headquarters of the Brohltal community . Zakowski completed an apprenticeship as a car mechanic in Andernach and passed his master's examination. Eventually he founded his own car workshop in Niederzissen. From this, the racing company Zakspeed was founded in 1968. In the same year, a Ford Escort from the racing team started for the first time under the name “Zakowski-Tuning Niederzissen” at the Eifel race on the Nürburgring .

In the 1970s and 1980s, Zakspeed established itself under the leadership of Zakowski as a permanent racing star alongside the works teams in various racing series, especially in sports cars (see Zakspeed for more information ). 1985 Zakowski led Zakspeed into Formula 1 . After five years, the racing team ended its commitment there due to continued unsuccessfulness. At the same time, Zakowski left active leadership of the team in 1990 and handed it over to his son Peter .
