The brothers Erik and Tore Ahlsén (* 1901 , † 1988 and * 1906 , † 1991 respectively ) were Swedish architects who jointly ran an architecture office in Stockholm under the name Erik & Tore Ahlsén .

life and work

Erik and Tore Ahlsén grew up in the suburb of Gröndal in Stockholm. Both got their education first at the art school and later at the Royal Technical University in Stockholm. Erik Ahlsén worked for the architectural office of the Swedish cooperative association Kooperativa Förbundet for 20 years and Tore Ahlsén worked for the architects Erik Lallerstedt and Gunnar Asplund .

In 1937 they opened their joint architecture office, which they ran together throughout their active professional life. The long, practical experience of large architectural offices and renowned architects is reflected in their works. Her designs include apartments, center complexes, public buildings, but also interior fittings and furniture. They shaped Swedish architecture from the 1930s to the late 1970s.

Årsta centrum in the Stockholm district of Årsta (1943–53) is an example of Ahlsén's work . It was one of the first suburban centers in Sweden and was designed according to the " community center " idea. A community center, library, theater, meeting rooms and cinema are grouped around an intimate marketplace, while the shops still played a subordinate role. The facades were boldly painted with abstract, large-scale patterns, which caused criticism. Today these facades are under monument protection .
