Erik Gottfrid Christian Brandt (born August 31, 1884 in Borrby , Kristianstads län ; † October 22, 1955 in Stora Tuna , Kopparbergs län ) was a Swedish politician ( Social Democratic Labor Party ).

Brandt came from a family of pastors in southern Sweden. After studying at Lund University , he became a primary school teacher in Luleå in 1911 . From 1915 he was a school inspector in Dalarna Province . In 1938 he was elected to the first chamber of the Swedish Reichstag , of which he was a member until 1943. Brandt had got a promising place on the list through two deaths and two resignations of party friends. In the Reichstag, Brandt was vehemently committed against German National Socialism , so he publicly protested against the excesses of the Reichspogromnacht of 9/10. November 1938.

Brandt was best known for his ironic action in which he nominated Adolf Hitler for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939 . The nomination was never seriously intended, but can be seen in protest against the nomination of Neville Chamberlain . During the Second World War he resolutely opposed the policies of the German Empire .
