Borrby (German Borbi , Estonian Swedish Borrbe ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Vormsi ( Vormsi vald ) in Lääne County . The place is in the north of the fourth largest Estonian island Vormsi (German Worms , Swedish Ormsö ).

Population and history

Borrby has only four residents today (as of December 31, 2011).

Borrby was first mentioned in 1526 as Borchbue . The name Boorby is documented for the year 1565 . Due to the name, it is speculated that the first settlers could come from the area around the Finnish city of Porvoo ( Borgå in Swedish ).

Like all Vormsis villages, the place was mostly populated by Estonian Swedes until the Second World War .

Attractions

Borrby used to have a chapel . Today only parts of the foundations are preserved.

Half a kilometer southeast of Borrby is the highest point on the island of Vormsi, the Högbacken . There is the largest boulder on the island, which is called Smen ("blacksmith") because of its anvil shape . It has a circumference of 22.6 meters.
