The Church of the Redeemer in Wroclaw on Bender Platz (today plac Stanisława Staszica ) was a Protestant church that was completed in 1904 and demolished in the mid-1950s after being damaged in World War II.

history

At the end of the 19th century there was no Protestant church in the Odervorstadt, while the magnificent Roman Catholic Church of St. Boniface was built on Schießwerderplatz from 1897–1898 . Therefore in 1901 an architectural competition for the construction of the Church of the Redeemer was organized. On the one hand, all Protestant Wroclaw architects were able to take part; on the other hand, six foreign architects who had already built Protestant churches and received professional recognition for this were expressly invited to participate: Albrecht Haupt (Hanover), Carl Hocheder (Munich), Jürgen Kröger (Berlin), Otto March (Berlin) and Richard Schultze (Berlin) as well as the architectural association Schilling & Graebner (Dresden). Although the jury awarded the design by Carl Hocheder with 1st prize and recommended its implementation to the municipality, the municipal corporation , with further advice from the jury chairman Oskar Hossfeld , decided to implement the design by Jürgen Kröger instead.

So the church was finally built opposite the Catholic Church of St. Bonifatius (Schliesswerderplatz and Benderplatz represent a double space) taking into account the Wiesbaden program and consecrated on September 2, 1904.

The church was damaged at the end of the Second World War during the Battle of Wroclaw and was initially temporarily secured. The Protestant community, which became very small after the population exchange , could not bear the financial burden of the reconstruction, so that the Church of the Redeemer was demolished in the mid-1950s. Today a supermarket has been built on their property .

architecture

The church was built in the neo-renaissance style, but there were also echoes of Art Nouveau in the interior design . The plan of the church formed a Greek cross , crossing and cross arms were vaulted. The more traditional outer shape with a central tower included a modern central room without any interfering intermediate supports. In the arms of wide transept were galleries built. The interior was painted by the company Spinn & Co., the altar was created by the Berlin sculptor Robert Schirmer .
